Pillar 4 - Initiatives 1 and 3 could be combined and would strive to reduce the total amount of waste (organic and inorganic) being sent to Evergreen. Becoming Environmentally Aware is a matter of Education and of leading by example. The Town of St Paul can exert tremendous influence in helping residents move in this direction:
1) Education-Collect information and hi-lite through media resources the actions that individuals, groups and businesses are currently undertaking to support Environmental Stewardship (eg the LOOP Program, 2nd Harvest Project, Lakeland Brewery providing mash to farmers, etc)
2) Education-Expand the grass clipping sticker program and make residents aware that the goal of the program is to divert organic material from the Landfill
3) Leading by Example- Have the Transfer Station Operators stockpile lawn and yard waste in an orderly pattern ( x amount of green + x amount of brown) to achieve the maximum amount of volume and weight reduction possible. Ideally build windrows that can be turned and mixed rather than huge piles. Provide the resulting compost to Evergreen for daily cover or follow through with screening the material and providing to residents.
